Resources in the Language Bank of Finland are accessible online via the Korp concordancing interface (Korp) or downloadable via the Download service. In the latter the data is provided in the source form (as received from the data provider) and/or in VRT format.
The source data is usually published in the Download service without further data processing, so no testing period is required and the data is published directly as stable release.
For publishing a resource in Korp or in VRT format for download, the data is processed by the Language Bank of Finland. Before the resource is finally made available to the user, test versions are created. The relevant stages during the development process are explained below.
As long as the license for a resource is still under negotiation and also during data processing, the resource is listed as forthcoming. Metadata and further information on a resource group page are available to the user, but not yet the data itself.
For publishing a resource in Korp, the data is processed and enriched with the help of different tools. Before a resource is made available to be used in Korp, the processed data and its performance in Korp has to be tested. When a Korp package together with a suitable configuration is created, this package will be installed in a Korp testing environment for internal testing. Also the resource provider might get access for testing purposes.
A release candidate (RC) is a version with the potential to be a stable release, which is ready for release, provided no significant problems occur.
This version will be published with the label release candidate. This resource can be found on the list of published resources with the label release candidate. The label, an extension to the resource name, marks the respective resource in Korp. In the Download service a file RELEASE_CANDIDATE.txt accompanies the downloadable data to inform the user about this release stage. A note is added to the metadata that this version may change without notice.
The status as release candidate will be removed and the version declared as the final version if no requests for corrections or changes are received within a period of around two weeks.
In case the data has to be fixed or changed, a new release candidate will be created and be made available as new release candidate for another two weeks. For this reason the release candidate can be numbered (RC1, RC2 etc.).
This version of a resource is the last release candidate which has passed all stages of verification and tests. Any known remaining issues are considered acceptable. The label as release candidate is removed from the resource’s name. For downloadable resources the file RELEASE_CANDIDATE.txt is removed from the download folder. In the list of published resources this resource is listed without any status label.
