Instructions for using CSC’s computing environment

Some of the Language Bank’s data sets are directly available in CSC’s high-performance computing (HPC) environment. The computing environment also offers various command-line tools that can be used to process and analyse language data.
You will need a CSC username to log in to the computing environment. If you do not yet have one, please read the registration instructions.

Please note that during summer 2026 Puhti will be replaced by Roihu, the new supercomputer at CSC. The name of the environment used prior to Puhti was Taito.

Guidelines for using CSC’s computing environment (in English)

The CSC computing environment as a working environment – logging in and basic settings

• • Logging in to the CSC computing environment
  • Uploading data and other files from your own computer to the computing environment and back
  • Changing your password
  • Changing the command interpreter (shell) (in Finnish)

  • Converting the character encoding of a single text file located in a computing environment using the iconv tool (in Finnish)

Location of the Language Bank’s data and tools within the computing environment

• The Language Bank’s data sets and tools available in the CSC computing environment are located in the directory /appl/data/kielipankki.
• Some of the corpora available via the computing environment are duplicates of corpora available on the Language Bank’s download service. However, certain datasets are only available within the computing environment.
• Access to some materials requires a personal license.

Using the tools available in the computing environment

• Analysing a text corpus using the egrep tool (in Finnish)
• Automatic morphosyntactic parsing of a text file using HFST tools (in Finnish)
