Resource information

LILABI (Linguistic Landscape of Bishkek) provides the largest open-access dataset of linguistic landscape for Bishkek, the capital city of Kyrgyzstan. The dataset comprises images of 511 unique signs in Bishkek, presented in 12 languages, primarily Russian, Kyrgyz, and English. Each file name starts with the coordinates where the photograph was taken, followed by the name of the photograph.

The data were collected between October 19 and 27, 2024, during a field trip to Bishkek organized by the HALS (Helsinki Diversity Linguistics Group). For ethical reasons, the people and plates in the photographs were manually cleaned up. The metadata was manually prepared for the languages and alphabets they contain, in addition to the concept of the sign, such as restaurant or bank. You can link the photographs to the metadata by using the ”name” key in the metadata file.
