<S5> <WRITING ON MARKERBOARD THROUGHOUT THE PRESENTATION> to understand the situation of er citizenship education now in spain we have to look back a little bit in the history , you can talk about citizenship with the first consti- constitution in spain that it was in 1912 er <WRITING ON MARKERBOARD, P:08> and then , you go through today @@ , in the middle , yeah we were a sovereignty till , 1930 mhm no 1925 and then <P:05> er 1933 till 1936 . during the republic period education . became the first goal of or the first work for the government so it was obligatory . to create free people <P:08> and to be , competitive , and critic <P:05> also in education were of course under the republic values so sovereignty and everything that was related with the er with the monarchy and everything was like forgotten or something like that then in the last election that were in 1933 , er franco decided that the left couldn't govern spain anymore because it was so horrible and three years of war mhm with the hitler . er experimenting in spain with franco @@ everything and of course franco i don't know what do what do you know about franco but franco was fascist and , er son of the bitch more or less @@ @and then@ we have franco during 50 years he dies in 1975 and our actual constitution it was in 1978 there has there hasn't been any change of the actual constitution it's the same , so in this period <P:10> education the the goal the main goal of education <P:06> was . create . catholic . patriotic <P:05> erm people with , it's exactly what is said in the er er how is the law (xx) more or less er with thirst , of empire <P:05> <SS> @@ </SS> very thirsty @@ so er franco decided that education wasn't something very important for an a state so he declined the mhm education process or the education file to , the chart so the chart . was who said what was what had to be tea- taught or everything . but franco er wanted to maintain also the patriotism and the empire thirst with histo- historical mhm the historical change in the curriculum so we had . we had they had , FEN that is er national spirit formation in spanish so here the histor- er the history was something more or less you could learn that spain is the centre of the world because erm god wanted to distribute the catholicism through us or something like that and things as , women couldn't erm wash themself when they had their period er because it was er a sin and everything was manipulated er and in FEN and in the , between FEN and the church . decided to show er different version of the history of spain so the er everything was er related with the i don't know how it's in english reconquer <NS8> [(xx) yeah] </NS8> [okay the muslims] <S2> yeah yeah </S2> . in er spanish @@ so mhm why spain was er catholic because in the history of spain er we always w- erm were fighting against muslims and (jews) and everything er related with that was horrible and so this was the our citizenship if you @can call it like that@ then in 1970 . there were a lot of revolts and everything in universities so franco was very old at this time and he was er i- si- erm ill @@ and there was a reform in the law , er also it was in the l- mhm you couldn't er learn languages because english and french were languages erm mhm old-fashioned and that mhm were going to disappear very soon because spanish is the most important language in the world and also i forgot , catalan , galician . valencian <P:05> and euskara <P:05> were completely prohibit- prohibited and of course you couldn't taught er you couldn't er teach in neither of these languages or speak in public or books everything was burned also during this time if you were related with the republic or s- you were socialist er communist whatever you were killed so er the educated people ran away to france or whatever russia i don't know in this reform , we get , er ah very funny also it wasn't a dictatorship it was an organic , democracy <SS> @@ </SS> , so this was that and then it was a little er little reform that i think it could be related with the perestroika because it was er to open a little bit the regime but also wanted to maintain the dictatorship and so on so , open , opener but still the same <P:07> and yeah when franco di- dies erm franco wanted to our actual king , to maintain the regime but er the king said no so we now are again a sovereignty and yeah during in this period the laws were er there was something like yeah transition <P:08> and the actual law . was created in this actual law with education the main goal now is to be critic <P:06> no , er you can understand why and also , er , identify . er (intolerance) <P:05> erm through , experience . and <P:05> res- to respect . the , language diversity . and a little bit more related only with citizenship it's not , so , of course this was completely centralised there was only one book for the whole country er . erm now the law is the 40 <REFERRING TO THE MARKER PEN> oh it's dying </S5>
<S2> if i- if you do a bit like this the the the other way yes like that yes <S5> oh </S5> , yes then then it should oh </S2>
<SS> @@ </SS>
<S5> okay er the 45 per cent of the curriculum is based on the national curriculum then each community has the 65 per cent of freedom to teach whatever it wants so what happens now erm er only madrid and two both castillas that are in the centre of spain er have the 45 per cent as an a 100 per cent and the other communities er has the 65 per cent of freedom curricul- free curriculum so er what is happening is that the weight of the erm mhm community curriculum is evidently higher than the national curriculum in catalonia er basque country valencia and galicia er that were very punished during the dictatorship that has became in something er to create a national feeling (part) in the way of catalonia and basque or whatever and yeah now in last year , er even religion is not er obliga- an obligatory subject in the curriculum we still have the possibility to do it and if you don't want to do it you can choose or you could choose er ethic but now mhm last year the government decided er to erm offer mhm instead of ethic citizenship education and it there's now a big fight because people that is in education thinks that er it's gonna be something like that er to indoctrinate and everything and so on even though erm , there exist another conflict because people in spain don't want to be related with the catholicism anymore and so mhm because of that we want to put out religion also of the curriculum and yeah this is our history </S5>
